I joined the Mackay Society in Nevada three years ago and the St. Andrew's Society about the same time.

I have a great deal of history already done for me and wanted to get to know some of my extended family as well as other people with an interest in Scotland and all things Scottish.

Since being in the St. Andrew's society I have been involved with the last two gatherings here in Las Vegas, and have set up my own tent.

I also have set up  tents for rugby championships, and anywhere else they will let me.

I will be participating in the gathering here again this year as well as the one in Reno, Nevada.

Aside from the gathering I am also involved in a program called "Scotland in a Suitcase". I have teamed up with the previous president and founder of our St. Andrew's Society to start this program for the education and enjoyment of schools, church groups, recreation centers, retirement homes, and the like.

We have been quite successful and average about one program per month. I especially like working with the young children, they are so thirsty for knowledge. Our program deals with a little history and we cover the tartan and clan system as well as music, dancing, stories and poems.

We have recruited several people in this area to help with our programs. From time to time, our reenactment group called the ""House of Stewart", puts on a play, where Mary Queen of Scots tells her story. We also have some wonderful young dancing students and talented pipers perform. We also use some great people from our society for stories and poems.

Hope you have enjoyed this article about what is happening in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Jan.15th to Feb.15th has been set aside by our governor, and entered into law, as Scottish Heritage Month. We try to make the most of it. Hope to meet some or all of you one day.

Thanks and Aye, Alberta Owens
