Charles E. McKay
Charles McKay, a native Texan, was born in
north-east Texas where he spent the years of his youth until moving to Houston
in 1955. He is a graduate of Spring Branch High School in Houston and attended
the University of Houston ultimately graduating from East Texas State University
with a BS Degree in Physics and Mathematics.
While attending the University of Houston, Charles worked as a Disk Jockey on
one of the higher profile Houston radio stations. In that capacity, he
entertained the citizens of Houston, Texas during afternoon drive time hours for
five years.
He married his high school sweetheart, Lynda Chambers (also a graduate of Spring
Branch High School). They have two children, Scott and Glenna.
Charles spent 35 years in the telecommunications industry and retired from
Nortel Networks in 1999.
He has deep Scottish roots and has been active in Texas Scottish activities for
more than 30 years. Charles’ father, Judge Neil McKay, an active member of the
Heather and Thistle Society in Houston and dedicated supporter of Scottish
heritage in Harris County, Texas, was the co-founder of the Clan Mackay Society
of America. This organization subsequently divided into the Clan Mackay Society
of Canada and the Clan Mackay Society, USA.
Charles and Lynda are regular visitors to Scotland where they spend 5 to 6 weeks
per visit dividing their time between the northern highlands in Mackay country
and western Ayrshire, the home of Robert Burns.
The two of them have been co-sponsors of the annual Burns Supper for the Dallas
Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the past 6 years.
Charles is a member of the Scottish Society of Dallas as well as The Heather and
Thistle Society of Houston and is currently serving the Scots of Texas as the
North Texas Commissioner for the Clan Mackay Society, USA.
