Mesa, Arizona Games, February, 2004

The Scottish Clan Gathering and Highland Games in Mesa, Arizona (Feb. 28th and 29th, 2004) was the site of many events in which Clan Mackay members participated. The Clan tent was a busy place as we were honored with a special guest in the person of Dave McKay, National Vice President of Clan Mackay Society, USA.  We were also honored with a visit from the Chief of the Games, Chief McBain, the 22nd hereditary chief of Clan McBain, and his wife, Lady Peggy McBain.

We were also pleased to learn that Beth Phillips, a member of Clan Mackay,

taught a short class on the Gaelic language at the gathering.

Al Kessel, the star athlete of the Arizona Clan Mackay, is again in top form after spending a year recuperating from a serious knee injury.  He won 1st place in the Caber, 1st place in the 56 Pound weight for height with a personal record of 13 feet, 2nd place in the Braemar Stone, 1st place in the 56 Pound weight for distance with a throw on 29 ft.81/2 in., 1st place in the 28 pound weight for distance with a throw of 61 ft 7 in., 1st place in the 22 pound hammer, 1st place in the 16 pound hammer with a throw of 104 ft 7 in., and also the overall aggregate trophy for the Arizona Men’s Class B.  We are very happy to see that he is again in top form and wish him well at future games.
