SUTHERLAND, 1803

The countess of Sutherland assembled all of the young men of her tenants.  She selected the best.  They were given a ‘Dram” and a pinch of snuff.  That was the way the regiment of the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders was enrolled into the army.  To refuse, of course, would mean that the family would be evicted.  The 93rd was at this time the best regiment.  They had 2 companies of Grenadiers, which meant they had enough tall, strong men to fill these 2 companies. Where the rest of the infantry was lucky to have enough for even one company.
