Margaret "Peg" McKay
December 29, 1921 - June 20, 2005.
Peg McKay died June 20, 2005, in Killeen, Texas.
Peg was born in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, December 29, 1921, the daughter of the late William and Ellen McCauley Burton. She met her then future husband, Ivor, there while he was serving with the United States Army during World War II. They were married in 1944 and settled in the United States after the war.
She was a recipient of the Molly Pitcher Award.
Peg served as the Treasurer of Clan Mackay Society of North America during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s and was granted honorary life membership at the 1993 Annual General Meeting of the then newly formed Clan Mackay Society of the USA Inc.
She was active with the retired personnel of the United States Army, 1st Cavalry Division, of nearby Fort Hood, Texas, as well as with the Boy Scouts of America, especially the Eagle Scout Program.
Known affectionately as “Mama Peg”, She was a regular Commissioner of the Mackay tent at various Highland Games in Texas as well as Stone Mountain, Georgia. She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Ivor McKay, Sr.; two sons, Ivor McKay, Jr., of Virginia, and John McKay of Copperas Cove; a daughter, Peg McKay Crowder, of Warm Springs, Georgia, who is the past Treasurer of Clan Mackay Society of the USA; a brother, Leonard Burton of Ireland; and a sister, Ruth Burton of Ireland; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Memorial service will be held Friday, June 24th at 10 a.m. at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home Chapel, 211 West Avenue B, Copperas Cove, Texas. Internment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made in her name to the National Boy Scouts of America, Eagle Scout Program.
